2001 Irv Otis Scholarship Winner - Andrea Lechowicz

Andrea Lechowicz is honored with the $500 Irv Otis Scholarship from the Detroit Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). Andrea also received her scholarship during Engineer’s Week at the Engineering Society of Detroit’s (ESD) Annual Gold Award Banquet in late February.

The scholarship is based on grade point average, IIE student chapter participation, senior IIE chapter participation and other school service activities. Andrea is a senior in Industrial Engineering at the University of Michigan – Dearborn. She is a native of Livonia and graduated from Stevenson High School in 1998. Andrea plans on graduating in May of 2001. She is a participant in the University’s concurrent undergraduate/graduate degree program, so she will be receiving both a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering. She is currently active in her IIE student chapter and has participated in several activities to recruit high school students and undecided basic Engineering students to the Industrial Engineering profession.

When asked why she chose the Industrial Engineering profession, Andrea replied, “I always had a great interest in science and math, but also in business. I felt that I.E. was the only Engineering field that overlaps both these interests. I believe it is the most people-oriented field in engineering. In addition, I find industrial engineering attractive because of the versatility it offers in career opportunities.” In addition to IIE, Andrea is also a member of the Society of Women Engineers and Alpha Pi Mu, the Industrial Engineering honor society. Other scholarships she has received include the American Polish Engineering (APEA) Scholarship, the University of Michigan-Dearborn Alumni Merit Scholarship and the Chrysler Minority and Women Scholarship.

Last summer Andrea was employed as a summer intern to the Ford Motor Company and she plans to return to Ford as an intern this summer. During her internship, Andrea did diagnostic service planning. In her future career, Andrea wants to be involved in statistical analysis or project planning. Outside of school activities, Andrea enjoys swimming, cycling, playing the piano and investing in the stock market.
